Port of entry: Oshawa Harbour

A large vessel from the U.S. carrying a heavy load of steel touched the Port of Oshawa this week, and with winds strong enough to cause some drifting, the vessel received a hand from this tug boat, which ensured a safe entry. According to harbour security, most ports such as the one in Oshawa are heavily secured due to new anti-terrorism legislation in North America that have been influenced by 911.

ABSOLUTE CRUELTY

An Australian kangaroo shot through the head with an arrow is expected to make a full recovery, wildlife officers say.
The injured kangaroo was found on Thursday in parklands near Melbourne's outer suburb, where it is believed to have survived for up to a week.
Melbourne Zoo vet Michael Lynch says he will monitor the kangaroo for the next three weeks but remains optimistic.
Wildlife Victoria has posted a Aus$10,000 ( US$7,600 ) reward to find the person responsible.
Wildlife Victoria spokeswoman Fiona Corke, said the kangaroo was rescued just days after another kangaroo was found with an arrow in its rump in the same area.
"It's just unbelievable, I can't believe that anyone would do something so cruel," she said.
The incident comes at a time when the Australian army is culling 6,000 kangaroos near the capital, Canberra - a move which has outraged conservationists.
The killings are intended to protect endangered plants and insects that share the grassy habitat with the kangaroos.

Visual Communications

I posted this image because I admire the advertising campaign that Patagonia uses for promoting outdoor lifestyle. All of this advertising fits their niche market, which is why companies like them spend thousands of dollars on ad agencies to produce visual communications for various advertising campaigns. These companies have a team of marketing individuals who also study the people that buy their products. Patagonia has a significant client base all over the world and they seem to focus well on their market. The avid mountain climber, the snowboarder, perhaps the serious hiker or even jogger, are all potential target markets for Patagonia. Brilliant imagery, colours and a message are the key factors to support such advertising goals when it comes to a campaign of this nature. It's evident that a strong style of visual communications is being used with this campaign. There are many others just like them that rely on visual communications to promote their products. We know the images we see as photography, but in the world of advertising and marketing they are part of visual communications!

Hanging out at the AGO

A friend and photography student every so often inspires our group with his work. He was out visiting at the Art Gallery of Ontario and took his point-and-shoot camera. Yes! This shot was taken with the Canon Powershot G10. I'll be sure to tell you more about this amazing camera in a future article or review. Pat explains that he needed to take the 6 photographs in order to achieve the wider field of view than the G10 allowed. So he had to think outside of the box or in this case, the camera! He hand-held all 6 photographs at 1/60th of second, using an aperture of f8 with a ISO setting of 200. He later post processed in Photoshop CS4; stitched 6 of the images, used levels to adjust the brightness and the digital polarizer filter to add a little darkness to the sky and make the colours in the wood pop! These are those once in a blue moon shots that inspire me to go out and shoot Architecture....nicely done Pat!

Special thanks going out to the staff at the show for giving us this opportunity to hang out with John and the well admired General Lee!
